The archaeological site of Begastri is situated 3 kilometres from the city center. There, Romans and Visigoths were settled and the presence of the Iberian culture can be verified since the 4th century BC.

As early as the 1st century AD. the area achieved the status of Roman Municipium, and was transformed into a classical city with public buildings, possibly including a forum, amphitheatre, temples, sanctuaries, gymnasiums and baths.

The pressure of the barbarian people, who caused the Imperial Rome to crumble, and Carthage to be destroyed, meant that Begastri reached its period of greatest splendour in the 3rd century AD and even became an Episcopal See. It is even said to have had a basilica where the popular Monogrammatic Cross of Cehegín, a symbol that refers to Christ, was kept.

Did you know that the sarcophagus of Adam was also found in this area? It was in the eastern gate and according to historians, some wealthy Christians moved it to Begastri in the 4th century AD.
