2.Begastri, The Lost City

Begastri is actually an arqueological See on the hill "Cabecico Roenas" 3 km. away from the present centre of Cehegin, which has been the seat of Iberian, Romans and Visigoths. At this time excavations and reconstructions are taking place in parts of the walls and other areas of the old city of Begastri. There is also a centre being constructed to welcome visitors. Begastri is one of the most important late-roman Sees of Spain.

In Begastri one can see  the remains of the Iberian culture before the IV century B.C. In the first century after Christ (A.D.) became an important municipality for the Romans, transforming into a classical city with public buildings, possibly with a forum, ampitheatre, temples, sanctuaries, gymnasiums and thermal spas.

At the end of the 3rd century A.D. Imperial Rome began its decline, because of the pressure of the Barbarians from the north, fighting on the Roman frontiers. Vandals, Suevos and Alanos began the conquest of the Iberian Peninsula territories. With the distruction of Carthago (Cartagena), the capital changed to Orihuela and Begastri reached the height of its splendor before converting to an Episcopal See.
